Unrealistic employer request made during interview process
Interview Experience
Hey Reddit readers, I’m sharing a request a Company (Insurance/Benefits) made to me, which I feel is unrealistic and disheartening. 1st week of June the HR recruiter for an Insurance company replied via email to my application for Client advisor role, and setup a phone interview with HR. After successful interview HR Outlined interview process as 3 rounds of virtual interviews. Next interview(1hour) was with the Director of Operations, and interview lead to me moving onto Round 2. I interviewed (1hour) with someone that is backfilling the position. Next day after Interview HR said Interviewer was impressed, and moved to next round. After about a week HR email said Director wants to have you onsite to interview with team but we don’t have schedule of availability yet. The company has office 4 hours from my home. So I was apprehensive about how the logistics of interview would work. And HR never mentioned the possibility of Onsite interview required for this remote role. So I had(and now have) questions regarding this interview process because it would be 8 hours round trip driving plus interviews onsite. Today (July 7) HR emails me requesting my availability to drive into Tampa FL and interview with 5 people for 1 hour each. Damn I’m trying to reconcile this request. It’s unrealistic. And kind of disrespectful in my view. Because for me in 2008-2010 I interviewed with 2 different companies that both flew me into their office for 2 days/1 night that included a dinner and voucher for food. Both of companies Declined me with no Offer. Now in 2025 I’m being requested to take a full day and half of my time to travel/interview for over 13 hours in 1 day. I am utterly shocked, stunned and disappointed. But I do plan to call HR and ask them if there is any type of Reimbursement for Travel and Lunch provided. As Maybe, Just Maybe someone would consider the Interview and Personal travel if reimbursed for expenses. But I’m 95% sure I’m going to decline. Share your thoughts.
