Unconscious Bias in Interviews: Has Anyone Else Felt This?
Interview Experience
I've noticed a pattern in my interview experiences over the years, and I wonder if anyone else relates. As a woman, I’ve felt that female interviewers tend to be more judgmental and critical, almost subconsciously looking for flaws rather than strengths. In contrast, male interviewers seem more curious, genuinely interested in getting to know me, and focused on my potential. Interestingly, my male friends have had the opposite experience, they feel more seen by female interviewers, while male interviewers make them feel judged and scrutinized. It makes me think there’s an unconscious bias at play. Women might apply high standards to other women. It’s almost like they are comparing and competing , like "If I had to be this perfect to succeed, why shouldn't she?" Meanwhile, men may be more open to seeing a woman’s strengths without feeling the need to compete. And vice versa, female interviewers might favor male candidates in the same way male interviewers favor female candidates, because there’s no internalized standard-setting or competition at play. Has anyone else noticed this in their interviews? Or am I overthinking it?
