Recently I had a job interview and they asked what 3 important things outside of work are to me, and I drew a blank! Interviewing makes me so nervous and I overthought the question. I responded with a good work life balance and being able to pursue my hobbies, and explained that is why PTO is important to me. They asked how much vacation I take at my current job and I was honest, I get about 4 weeks of PTO. I went into this interview for practice but now I’m wishing I didn’t mention the PTO and would have tried to negotiate that if I got an offer! At the same time, I’ve been a nurse for 7 years and I don’t think starting over at a new company warrants a measly 1-2 weeks of PTO/year. I would rather be upfront about what I require rather than waste everyone’s time. Also this job would be a pay cut so I figured, may as well try for more PTO. The interview was on Monday, they said they’d let me know either way by Friday. I hate the waiting game. Edit: thanks for everyone’s input. In the future I don’t plan on mentioning PTO in the interview, but will instead bring it up during the screening phone call. Guess I didn’t realize the people I’m interviewing with probably have no say in how much I make or what benefits I get. Haven’t heard back yet (Saturday now) so probably didn’t get the job! It could or could not be because of that question, who knows. I thought the interview went well otherwise, so if it’s because of talking about PTO then it’s not meant to be.
