Going from creative to tech in the design field
Interview Experience
I'm a graphic designer and I received an interview request for a tech designer position. All of my professional experience has been in creative agencies, so constantly juggling several projects of all kinds between many clients. My portfolio is definitely more illustrative but it includes my case studies and my decision making process. I'm happy that they gave me the chance but was genuinely shocked as I felt like my illustrative works would drive them away. I prepared every which way in terms of how to answer every question. Things like: Why do I want to move away from creative and into fintech, what I actually know about the finance world, how I can pivot and adapt, everything including finance jargon I didn't know before. I even prepared to explain that I have product design experience (not a lot, but enough to benefit the role when passing off assets to the actual product designers) It was a short 30 min interview with the design director but he didn't really ask much besides where I was from, my favorite project, how much ownership I had of the process, and that was really it. He mentioned that he really valued my work because it was diverse and that because he's been in the same industry as me before he went into tech, he already knows what it takes to do what I do and that I'm more than capable of doing the job for this position. I came prepared to defend myself and explain why I wanted to pivot into tech but none of that was necessary. I almost feel like I was forcing opportunities to talk about my skills in fear I would lose the chance to say I'm competent. I felt bad because it seemed like he genuinely just wanted to get a feel for what kind of person I was. But I honestly think that the biggest reason I had the opportunity to get an interview was mainly because the director shared similar niche industry experience as me. We ended with him saying "I know you're capable but when you meet the team, you'll have to explain your capabilities/they'll be less likely to understand what you're capable of based off of your portfolio at a glance" I'm going to take this as a positive or that I will be moving onto the next stage? But this company is notorious for interviews taking 1-5 months so I'll wait and see. The director mentioned that they didn't have a formal designer position and just product designers so they were looking for someone to really add oomf to their brand identity. It's a position that doesn't exist yet. This position has everything I'm looking for so it's something that I really want. My assumption is that if I make it further in the process, I would meet with stakeholders and they would ask me the hard questions such as finance jargon and what I actually like about their company. Has anyone gone from creative to fintech? How did you present yourself in front of non-designers at the company?
