I recently interviewed for a Senior Software Engineer position at Visa. After applying via LinkedIn, I completed a CodeSignal assessment consisting of four relatively easy questions under strict proctoring. The subsequent process involved two technical rounds covering a broad range of topics, including problem-solving, OOP, Design, Spring, and Microservices. The first technical round was initially rescheduled at the last minute due to interviewer unavailability, which was inconvenient regarding work-from-home planning. However, the rescheduled session was conducted professionally by a different interviewer who focused on Java internals and project experience. I advanced to the next stage within two days. The second round presented significant procedural issues. The interviewer—the same individual who had cancelled the initial session—arrived 20 minutes late. Throughout the call, he kept his camera off, appeared unprepared, and asked primarily theoretical, textbook-style questions rather than engaging in practical technical discussions. He seemed rushed and unaware of which stage of the interview process I was in. Toward the end of the 40-minute session, background noise suggested he had joined a parallel meeting, and the interview ended abruptly. Despite answering almost all questions and attempting to ground the theoretical queries in practical experience, I received a generic rejection email two days later. While the recruitment staff was helpful throughout the process, the lack of professionalism displayed during the technical assessment highlights a need for better interviewer training and standardized protocols to respect the time and effort candidates invest.
