I'm still in the mid stages of interviewing for a company and they have a posted salary range so I'm wondering how to go about it in the future if I get to an offer stage. The posted salary range is a SIGNIFICANT bump from my current role. Like I mean nearly 250% of my current salary. Since the person I'd be reporting to has been in a similar industry switch situation, they likely know a general range of how much I'm being paid currently and they know that I'm being paid crumbs (lol) so I don't want that to be an advantage for them... My thought is that I would say:"Based off of skills and what I bring to the table as a candidate and considering competitive salaries for those who have similar qualifications in this industry, ideally that number would be in the upper range of your posted salary band but I'm open to discussion based on the full package." Is this a good route? That way I don't have to give a specific number and see if they reveal a number first? I know people recommend anchoring by going 10k above the actual amount you want, but for me, that's quite literally the maximum number within the band and I do feel nervous about asking for that. It might sound silly but I'm not planning to strive for the highest within the band. My ideal is the midpoint, and slightly above midpoint would be great.
