When interviewers say ‘Tell me about yourself’ are they actually looking for your resume in story form?

I keep running into this question, and no matter how much I prep, it always feels awkward. If I go too “personal,” I feel unprofessional. If I stick to a timeline of my work history, I sound robotic.
