So, I had an interview today. Not a biggie. Most of the interviews I’ve had with big companies like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart, and a slew of others offering entry level roles just end up with either no feedback or the rejection email(used to be they would send an actual rejection letter to your residence, costing anywhere from $0.10 to $1.50). Today’s was with the onsite supervisor, and didn’t know where it was headed. Within about five minutes we were talking about places we lived my background and what our motivations were, stuff like that. It’s usually how I try to steer the interview. I thought it was actually going good. Then he tells me the two previous people that filled the position were older than he and couldn’t do the physical labor. They ultimately, wound up quitting. I kind of see his point. He then explains that the next two questions are kind of important to him. Did you research this position and when was the last manual labor job I had. This position involved recapping tires. Not passenger car tires. So then he asks me if I would be able to do the job with the amount of physical activity. Well I don’t lie and try to be as honest as possible in everything. So from what little he told me of the job, I told him no. There are several reasons for what I answered. I’m having a small twinge in my back. Used to be I would have it and a week later it would sort itself out. I’m 63. He asked me. Yes I know. He was the kind of guy that would know BS when he heard it and act on it. So we were being honest and I probably didn’t get the job, and shouldn’t take it if I were offered it. I realized that as we were talking halfway through the interview. I’m not getting any younger, and I am not afraid of actual work. I realized I wouldn’t be there very long. However, this interview style, was he right in light of my age and shape? I had many physical jobs, unloading racks of 14400 panels each, about eight racks per shift, which took 15-20 minutes each. I sanitized clean rooms, in a production facility. Daily, weekly, monthly, annually. This was mostly ceilings, walls, and floors. No one wanted to do them, so I volunteered most of the time. So that was that.
